Arataki Honey Farm - all about bees

What a fun trip we had to the Arataki Honey Farm.  The students were so excited about travelling together on the bus, it was quite an adventure.  A highlight for most students was being able to make their own beeswax candles with special shapes made with cookie cutters.  We learned that bees are very smart.  Male bees are very lazy!  The female worker bees do all the work.  Beekeepers wear special protective equipment to collect the honey.  Bees collect nectar and pollen from flowers to make their honey and hives.  Bees live in cells that are 6 sided shapes called hexagons. We also learned that bees sting and then they die, and that there are different types of honey.   We learned about the body parts of the bee and about the queen bee who is protected in the hive and she has a dot on her.  Lots of great new learning!
